Topic: Expository Scripture: Exodus 21:33–22:15

The following study guide is to be used to discuss the Friday, February 8, 2019 sermon.

Study Guide - Exodus 21:33-22:15

Introduction – In the first half of Exodus, God revealed His power and sovereignty over people and creation when he rescued Israel out of Egypt and defeated the Egyptians in the Red Sea. God continues to reveal Himself to the people through the laws that He gives them. The different laws show what it means to love God and love our neighbours. In the previous passage we learnt about God’s concern for human life, and in today’s passage we see that the God of the Bible is a God who values justice and fairness among his people.

READ Exodus 21:33-36 and 22:5-6
1. Why are these laws about pits, cattle and fires relevant to us today? What do these laws teach about how we should relate with people around us?

2. How are the laws in 21:33-36 different from the ones 21:28-32?

READ Exodus 22:1-4
3. How do these laws about thieves reveal God’s interest in justice and fairness and the importance of loving our neighbours?

READ Exodus 22:7-15
4. Since there were no banks in ancient Israel, money and property (such as cattle) often needed to be lent and borrowed by people. So, laws were  required which would protect both the lender and the borrower in case of loss or damage. How do these laws protect the lender and the borrower?

Application: These laws were given to Israel as a nation. Since we do not live in a nation state, we do not have authority to enforce such laws. But God has given the church authority to carry out church discipline. How does church discipline help to ensure justice and fairness among the people of God?

READ Leviticus 6:1-7 and Luke 19:1-10
5. In Leviticus, God explains what a person should do if they want to confess their sin of cheating their neighbour. How do Zacchaeus’ actions go beyond what the Old Testament law required him to do?

Gospel Connection: How do the laws of property and theft and restitution point forward to Jesus’ death?
