SERMON OUTLINEMain Idea: Christ has ordained that His church must be led by a team of godly men known as elders, who will shepherd the flock, teach the Word, and oversee the church. These elders, also called “pastors” or “overseers,” are appointed by the Holy Spirit, are authorized and accountable to Christ himself, and are recognized by the congregation.
I. Who are Elders? 1. Terminology: Elders / Pastors / Overseers (Acts 20:28; 1 Peter 5:1–2) 2. Qualifications: Above Reproach (1 Tim 3:1–7; Titus 1:3–9) a. Above Reproach in Family Management (1 Tim 3:2,4; Titus 1:6) b. Above Reproach in Godly Character (1 Tim 3:2,6–7; Titus 1:7–8) i. NOT arrogant, quick-tempered, quarrelsome, drunkard, greedy ii. Hospitable, Self-controlled, sober-minded, gentle, respectable c. Above Reproach in Sound Doctrine (1 Tim 3:2; Titus 1:9) 3. Appointment: Gifts of Christ, appointed by the Spirit, recognized by the congregation (Eph 4:11; Acts 20:28; Gal 1:6–9)
II. What do Elders do? 1. Shepherds of the Flock (Jer 3:15; 23:4; John 21:15–17; Acts 20:28; 1 Pet 5:1–4) 2. Teachers of the Word (Jer 3:15; Eph 4:11–14; Col 1:28–29; Titus 1:9) 3. Overseers of the Church (Acts 6:1–6; 1 Tim 5:17; 1 Pet 5:2; Heb 13:17)
III. How should you relate and respond to your Elders? 1. Trust their leadership (1 Tim 5:17). 2. Submit to their authority (Heb 13:17). 3. Follow their example (1 Cor 11:1; Phil 3:17; Heb 13:7). 4. Confront them with due process if they sin (1 Tim 5:19–20). 5. Love and Honor them for their service (1 Thess 5:12–13).
