Introductions: Tell one thing about your attitude and experiences related to fish and fishing.
This week we will continue using the Inductive Bible Study method to study the gospel of Mark. (See attached directions.) We recommend you continue reading Mark, as if it were a novel. Then take time to answer the questions on the directions, as they relate to Mark 1:16-31. Another document is attached, which is a compilation of comments from commentaries about some things in the passage that might be difficult to understand without additional information.
Questions the small group study will focus on:
OBSERVATIONS:
1. When did the events in this passage happen? Note expressions of time.
2. What words and phrases are repeated?
3. What comparisons and contrasts do you find in the passage? Why might they be significant?
INTERPRETATION:
4. What are the themes of the passage? Try to express each theme in a brief sentence, weaving your observations together and using words from the text.
APPLICATION:
5. Teaching: what did you learn?
6. Rebuking: what do you need to stop doing?
7. Correcting: what do you need to start doing?
8. Training in righteousness: what do you need to continue doing?
Supplementary reading: We have King's Cross, by Timothy Keller, available for you to purchase, if you would like to read his comments Gospel of Mark. This book will challenge you, make you think, and give you insight into what it means to be more like Jesus. We highly recommend this book!
