In this opening paragraph of the letter in Colossians
1:1-8 Paul makes reference to the gospel and the fact that it was “bearing
fruit and growing” in Colosse and all over the world.
What are the signs of life that tell us the gospel is bearing fruit and growing
in our lives and in our church? Find out in this message entitled: When the
Gospel Bears Fruit…

I Am Praying for You! How
often do we say that to other Christians? How often do we ask others to pray
for us? But when we pray, what do we ask for? What is the content of our
prayers? In this message from Colossians 1:9-14, we listen in as Paul
prays for the Colossian Christians. How does his prayer list compare to ours?
What does this teach us about the true priorities of life?

Who Is Jesus? It
was a question that raged when Jesus was on earth. It remains a question of
considerable debate and controversy today. In this message, we look at Colossians
1:15-23, one of the richest passages in Scripture on the nature and
identity of Jesus. It is a high mountain range of truth about Christ. Six
particular “peaks” of truth draw our attention.

Mystery, riches, hidden treasure. It sounds like the ingredients of an exciting book.
Instead, they are the ingredients of an exciting life, eternal life. In this
message from Colossians 1:24-2:5, entitled The Mystery of the Hidden
Treasure, we explore the nature and content of the mystery and also the
ministry that grows out of it.

It will take us two weeks to work our way through the
riches of Colossians 2:6-23. In this first message, entitled Walking
in the Shadow of the Cross, we observe how Paul takes us back to the basics
of the gospel and of our faith, and then urges us to
continue as we began, to walk close to Christ and the gospel we first learned.
We look at four different word pictures Paul uses to describe the richness of
our salvation.

The Colossian church was being threatened by the arrival
of false teachers and false teaching. In this key section of the epistle, Colossians
2:6-3:4, Paul does two things. He warns us about the false teachers and
gives us some clues on how to recognize them. He then shows us that the best
way to avoid their errors is to build a strong foundation on Christ and what he
has done for us. In this message, Pastor Cam likens the false teachers to wild
animals in a game reserve, and warns us to Stay in the Car!

A Christian Dress Code. Is there such a
thing? Actually there is, but it has very little to
do with clothing and everything to do with character and conduct. In Colossians
3:5-14, Paul uses the metaphor of clothing and lists certain things we must
“take off” and other things we are to “put on” as Christians. Find out what
they are, but even more importantly, find out why it so vital to connect this
message with the message from last week on the completed work of Christ.

Are we Ready to Travel? In this
message from Colossians
3:15-17, Pastor Cam develops the metaphor of getting ready
for a school sports trip. Paul, as our coach, reminds us of the
expectations and standards as we get ready to travel and represent our “team”
in the tournament.

Our God is a God of order. That order is visible in creation.
God also has a plan for order in society and in families. But with the word
“order” comes the word “authority”. In this message
from Colossians
3:18-4:1, entitled This Pleases the Lord, we examine
how the Christian’s acceptance of Christ’s authority (remember the theme:
Christ Above All) affects and impacts his/her response to and exercise of
authority in the home and in the workplace.

In this message, entitled Final Instructions,
taken from, Paul picks up on two topics that many Christians find
difficult and challenging: prayer and Christian witness. As Paul in Colossians 4:2-6 challenges us
to work hard at prayer and to be wise and diligent in our witness for the
gospel of Christ, we find that he is still urging us to keep “our heads in the
clouds and our feet on the ground.”

We have completed our journey through Paul’s letter to
the Colossians. In this concluding message, we step back from the canvas
and our contemplation of the details and survey the big picture, the large
sweep of Paul’s concerns which prompted the writing of this letter. What were
the errors which were threatening the church in Colosse?
In what forms do those same errors threaten Christians and churches today?
Pastor Cam also turns the message into a challenge to the 31 people who were
baptized at the end of the service. To them and to all followers of Christ, the
challenge remains: Christ Above All! In the universe
and in our lives. |
