During the hot 2005, Abu Dhabi-summer months, we Sipped from the Psalms in our Friday services. Each week, Pastor Cam led us in meditation on a different psalm, seeking spiritual refreshment and renewal.

September 2

In Psalm 90, possibly the oldest psalm in the Bible, Moses takes stock of the rapid passing of time, and the brevity of human life, and he prays: Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom. In mediating on this psalm, we discover 5 ingredients that are included in a heart of wisdom.

Why do we exist? What is our purpose? Over the centuries, the church of Jesus Christ has asserted that the “chief end of man is to glorify God”. What does that mean and how do we do it? In this message, entitled Sing to the Lord a New Song! we look at Psalm 96. A classic example of a praise psalm, Psalm 96 answers the basic Who, What, When, Where, Why and How of praise.

August 12

Psalm 2 is quoted in the New Testament more times than any other psalm! Why was this ancient “coronation psalm” so popular with the New Testament authors? Who is this King whom God is installing on Jerusalem’s holy hill? When will the installation take place? And what does it mean to Kiss the Son?

August 5

There are 15 psalms that were identified as “Songs of Ascent”, songs or prayers that Jewish pilgrims used as they went up to Jerusalem to worship at one of the annual feasts. In this message from Psalm 130, we consider how the pilgrims were prepared spiritually to stand and worship in the presence of God: The Sinner’s Dilemma, the Sinner’s Hope and the Sinner’s Testimony make up the main points in this message.

There are seven psalms that were identified by the early church as Penitential Psalms; psalms that express sorrow and regret for sin. In today’s message, The Backslider’s Prayer, we look at one of those, Psalm 6. We look at the concept of the backslider, as well as some of the common experiences of backsliders. Most importantly, we examine the way back to fellowship with God.

July 22

In this message, entitled Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep, taken from Psalm 3, we find David, fleeing in fear of his life from his own son Absalom. Every messenger arrives with more bad news. His entire earthly security system lies in shambles. Yet in the midst of the crisis, David is able to lie down and sleep. What is his secret?

July 15

In this message, entitled How Majestic Is Your Name!, taken from Psalm 8, we join David as he sits on the Judean hillside, contemplating the night sky. His awe at God’s creation leads him to meditation and praise. We, too, need to make time to ponder God’s creation, and turn those times into thoughtful prayer, meditation and worship.

April 8

THEN I ENTERED THE SANCTUARY…In this message from Psalm 73 we look at a time when the psalmist “almost lost it” and we will also see where he went to “get his head back together.” The hinge of the psalm lies in the phrase, “then I entered the sanctuary.” What happened in the sanctuary? And how can what the psalmist learned and experienced there help us as we struggle with the painful experiences and riddles of our lives?
