In this final sermon in our series on Ezra and Nehemiah, entitled: A Man Who Left A Mark, we search the text of the book for clues to the character of Nehemiah as a man and a leader. What was it in his character and moral and spiritual fiber that shaped him and made him a man who left his mark on the history of Israel? What can we learn from him that will enable us to make an impact in our world?
In this sermon, from Nehemiah 2-6, entitled “WITH THE HELP OF OUR GOD” we look at the many challenges Nehemiah faced in rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem. From opposition, to discouragement to a labor strike, the pressure never let up. But he persevered by applying a vital principle.
In this sermon, from Nehemiah 1-2, entitled “Then I Prayed to the God of Heaven,” we consider the simple formula: Problem + Response = Result. We don’t choose our problems, but we do choose our responses. When we, like Nehemiah, respond to our problems with prayer, God acts. We also take a close look at the content of Nehemiah’s prayer and find a helpful model for our own prayers.
“GOD, WE’RE SORRY!” In Ezra 9-10, Ezra confronts unfaithfulness in the community of returned exiles. How did he respond? What were the effects on the community? In addition to studying his actions and their effects, we will also take a close look at the prayer that changed a community.
THE HAND OF OUR GOD WAS ON US. In Ezra 7-8, we pick up the account of a second wave of exiles returning to Jerusalem under the leadership of Ezra. Six times in these chapters, Ezra states that “the hand of our God was on us.” What happened as a result of God’s hand being on Ezra? And what are the prerequisites or preconditions for us, if we desire God’s hand upon our lives and undertakings?
WEAK HANDS, STRONG HANDS. In Ezra 4-6, the work of rebuilding the temple is completed. But it was not without many challenges and delays. As we examine these chapters together, we will find things that “weakened the hands” of the workers, and things that “strengthened the hands” of the workers.
THE LORD STIRRED THE SPIRIT OF THE KING. This message is the first in a series on the Old Testament books of Ezra and Nehemiah. In this message, from Ezra 1-3, we survey the history of Israel and the specific prophecies that set the stage for the events recounted in these books. As we see God working in the rebuilding of the temple, we see specific truths that we will need as we engage in our own building project.
